If an agent suggests editorial changes, do I have to make them? Will I lose my agent if I don’t?
This question has come up several times recently in my conversations with writers.
Agents are publishing professionals, and most are pretty savvy about what will sell—after all, we wouldn’t be in the business if we weren’t.
Assuming you’ve landed a good agent, it’s wise to be open to any editorial suggestions they offer. More often than not, their advice will make your book stronger and more marketable.
That said, your conscience and critical judgment should guide you when considering any requested changes. If you can present a solid argument for why you don’t want to make a particular change, a good agent should respect your decision and move forward.
Remember, the work is ultimately yours, and you need to feel confident about what goes out with your name on it.
In my experience, the best writers are those who embrace constructive criticism and use it to enhance their work.
Happy writing!
