If you’re your own publisher, you’re also your own marketer.
Don’t expect to see your book in big chains or on bestseller lists right away—few small businesses start there. But here are a few realistic steps to market your book:
1. Many bookstores and libraries host “local author” days. Pitch your book directly to the organizer. Bring promotional materials like bookmarks to hand out. The event gives you free publicity, and if you sell well, the host might stock your book.
2. Think outside the bookstore. Ask toy stores, sporting-goods shops, clothing stores, or museums—anywhere your audience may be—to stock your book. If your book matches their products and looks professional, they might carry it for a cut of the sales.
3. Libraries consider book requests for future purchases. Have friends and family request your book. This strategy also works with bookstores. Ask supporters to buy your book from stores rather than directly from you.
4. Send a press release to your local paper. Include ordering information, but make it sound like news, not an ad.
5. Send copies to reviewers, both local and major. Smaller reviewers are often more interested in indie books.
6. Buy a mailing list and send a targeted direct mail packet. For example, if your book is a teen sci-fi, target parents of teens who love sci-fi. Choose your list wisely.
7. Advertise in niche magazines related to your book’s theme. Local publications and industry-specific magazines are often a good place to start.
8. Create a website or social media profiles for yourself as an author. This is better than focusing on just one book. Link to as many relevant sites as possible.
