Doing a “fence sit” here.
I am a published author and also an agent.
What should writers know on their quest to find an agent?
Every writer should understand that everyone in the publishing business is looking for books that will appeal to a large segment of the reading public.
I believe that authors who want commercial success should periodically read books from reputable “Best Seller” lists — such as the New York Times Best Sellers List, Amazon’s Best Sellers, and even Oprah’s — to stay current with what the reading public is responding to.
How many aspiring authors can name three books on any of these lists right now?
I’m always amused when I hear them say they want to get on “the list”, yet they don’t know much about “the list”.
(Hmmm…that has a Seinfeld episode ring to it: The Alternate Side, Season 3, Episode 11- The Car Rental 🙂 )
On the flip side:
HUGE (note the capital letters) — Find someone who loves your work, can discuss it intelligently with you, and has the right contacts to pitch your project.
How can I help?
